Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the production of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. The disease primarily affects individuals of African descent, as well as those of Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean descent.
A person in need of a Sickle Cell Anemia test includes those with a family history of the disease, as it is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Therefore, if both parents are carriers of the abnormal gene, their children have a 25% chance of inheriting the disease. Additionally, couples who are planning to have a child may also be recommended to have the test to determine their risk of having a child with the disease.
